One of the most impressive shows I have seen in my life, Rammstein lived up to their reputation and delivered the goods- with a bang. With a large black curtain covering the stage at Big Day Out Auckland 2011, the crowds began to swell as the rain poured down. The air was thick with tension as small chants of ‘Rammstein! Rammstein!’ could be heard throughout the stadium. As soon as the first note played loud on the speakers the crowd went nuts, myself included. The first song played was Rammlied, not surprisingly. Great opener with great lighting. However, they didn’t start really getting into the pyrotechnics till the second song, ‘Waidmanns Heil’ which REALLY got the crowd going.
Talk about feeling the energy!
The audio alone was FANTASTIC! You could clearly hear everything, it sent shivers down my spine. The set list included the songs (not in order) ‘Waidmanns Heil’, ‘Keine Lust’, ‘Links 2,3,4’, ‘Ich Will’, ‘Du Hast’, ‘Benzin’, ‘Mein Teil’, ‘Du Riechts So Gut’, ‘Feuer Frei!’, ‘Sonne’ to be finished up with ‘Pussy’, which disappointingly didn’t have Till on the penis spraying out foam.
The pyrotechnics were unbelievably awesome, I’ve seen them in plenty of videos in my time but you really need to see them live to fully appreciate them. A lot of the acts were famous moments such as Flake being in the giant pot during ‘Mein Teil’ (as seen in Volkerball.) The best part was probably when Till light someone on fire during ‘Benzin’ which got a great response from the crowd.
The only major noticeable songs missing was ‘Ich Tu Der Weh’ and ‘Heisfich’, the other two singles released from their latest album ‘Liebe ist fur alle da’ which they are currently promoting.
Overall, a great show and performance that clearly outshone every other act playing on the day including Tool, there was just no way they would be able to compete with the force and might that is Rammstein.
