In a recent interview, David Ellefson was asked if he would be ready for a reunion with Megadeth.
“Yes, of course, I’m ready. I couldn’t have imagined that I wouldn’t be in the band right now. [Laughs]. So, now that Megadeth’s retirement has been announced, there are some things we would need to discuss. It’s reminiscent of how it was last time.
We hadn’t spoken with Dave — I don’t know — for four or five years, maybe three or four years, and then Shawn Drover connected us both on the phone. It was about a two-minute conversation. I threw my bass in the car, drove through the desert to San Diego, we plugged in, and played ‘Symphony Of Destruction’. It was as if the last time we played was yesterday. It sounded amazing — like Megadeth. And we looked at each other and thought, ‘Why haven’t we spoken for the past five years?’ You know what I mean? It’s so stupid.”
The bassist claims their friendship would never have fractured without external influence:
“There are always some outside forces that drive us apart. It doesn’t depend on us. If it were up to him and me, we’d probably still be playing together. But there are always external influences, advisors, and all that nonsense. And so the reality is that when Dave and I hang out, it’s usually pretty chill. It really is.
But he has his band now. I’m not in that band, and it’s his band. I’m not going to break up his team. But if he were to call, provided it was a friendly environment, and I’m sure it would be, why wouldn’t I agree? Megadeth was my band, too. It’s also my life’s work.”
