Niemand kann das Bild beschreiben No one can describe the picture
Gegen seine Fensterscheibe against his windowpane
Hat er das Gesicht gepresst He presses his face against it
Und hofft, dass sie das Licht anlässt and hopes that she will leave the light on
Ohne Kleid sah er sie nie He never saw her without a dress
Die Herren seiner Fantasie The masters of his fantasy
Er nimmt die Gläser vom Gesicht He takes the glasses off his face
Singt zitternd eine Melodie Trembling, sings a melody

Der Raum wird sich mit Mondlicht füllen The room will fill with moonlight
Lässt sie fallen, alle Hüllen Let them fall, all the covers
Der Anblick ist ihm sehr gewogen The view is very favorable to him
Spannt seine Fantasie zum Bogen Stretches his imagination
Der Atem stockt, das Herz schlägt wild His breath stops, his heart beats wildly
Malt seine Farben in ihr Bild He paints her picture in his colors
Steht er da am Fensterrand He stands there at the edge of the window
Mit einer Sonne in der Hand with a sun in his hand

Ganz nah Very close
So weit weg von hier So far away from here
So nah So close
Weit, weit weg von dir Far, far away from you
Ganz nah Very close
So weit weg sind wir So far away are we
So nah So close
Weit, weit weg von mir Far, far away from me

Wieder ist es Mitternacht Again it’s midnight
Sie stehlen uns das Licht der Sonne They steal from us the light of the sun
Weil es immer dunkel ist Because it’s always dark
Wenn der Mond die Sterne küsst when the moon kisses the stars

Ganz nah Very close
So nah So close

Ganz nah Very close
So weit weg von dir So far away from you
So nah So close
So weit weg sind wir So far away are we

  1. I love all of your interpretations of the song, and I would like to add mine. I somehow get the feeling that the song is about the fans. Yes there is a theme of voyerism, but I feel like it could be thought as the fans looking up to the band, wanting to be so close and feeling almost orgasmic about the music and shows. What gives me this feeling is that the verses are sung in third person, yet the chorus is “Very close, so far away from here, so close, far, far away from you
Very close, so far away are we, so close, far, far away from me”
The whole singing a melody (people singing Rammsteins songs)
Stretching imagination, painting pictures with his colors, master of his fantasy (giving the songs their own meaning)
Hoping that they leave the light on or reveal something/be naked (hoping to find the ‘right’ interpretasions of thr songs)

This could be just my imagination but that is what I like about Rammstein, everybody can have their own ideas of what the songs are about.

  2. To me this song is very emotional, and personally it is one for longing to somebody far away.
But, when we look at 2019 and think a bit, we could perhaps be looking at a song about current social media problems?
Looking at somebody seemingly so perfect, so far away and imagining their life? I thinks this song could fit that.

Needless to say, this is one of my favourite songs off the album, and I make my own longing interpretation.

  3. Soyuz, I think he uses the term Sun because it is a sign of life, fertility, future and pleasure. It’s the reason this planet, and ultimately we, exist and breathe. One could say the same of the penis and it’s role in nature. It wouldn’t make sense for it to be referencing a flashlight…why would you shine a flashlight through the window of the person you’re spying on?! 😀
Also, I just wanted to touch again on the “Wenn der Mond die Sterne küsst” line. I think this is actually a very classically Till tongue-in-cheek line. The Moon is referring to her derriere. It’s kissing the stars by being bared at night, apparently in private. But it’s dark for him because he is alone and possibly ashamed now that he has climaxed and has the clarity to realise how perverted he is, and how “So far away we are”

  4. Scott, this is actually a very interesting and reasonable conclusion to make. I just don’t quite get why Till would’ve used the word Sonne to describe the character’s penis. I agree that he says “Ich stehle uns das Licht der Sonne” and not sie stehlen. You certainly could be onto something.
I love this song. Such a beautiful melody and so disturbing. Classic Rammstein.

  5. This song is much darker I think than people seem to realise. In a literal sense, it’s about a man who is a Peeping Tom and a pervert. He’s watching a woman through the window, that much is clear. But what I don’t think is being noticed is that he’s masturbating while watching her. “Der Atem stockt, das Herz schlägt wild
Malt seine Farben in ihr Bild” Here he is now, after having watched her and seeing her naked for the first time, having an orgasm. His breath has stopped and his heart racing, he has “painted her in his colours.” or fantasised about her as he comes.
“Steht er da am Fensterrand, Mit einer Sonne in der Hand” Here, the sun in his hand refers to his penis. Furthering this idea, I believe, is the chorus of the song. “Ganz nah” meaning so close to an orgasm, but yet so far away from her in reality. He can only have sex with her in his mind. Hence, “So weit weg sind wir” or; so far away from them actually being a couple.
“Sie stehlen uns das Licht der Sonne” I think this lyric is actually, “Ich stehle uns das Licht der Sonne.” The stealing the light from the sun is actually an allegory to him ejaculating from the previously mentioned “sun” in his hand. Because it’s always dark when the moon kisses the stars, which I think refers to the fact he’s always actually alone when he’s watching her undress… he’s not able to share in his fantasy with her.
Obviously, this is my subjective opinion, but given how dark Till can be with his lyrics and his often very sexualised imagery, I think this is the real meaning of the song.

  6. Amazing song and was my favourite on the album from day one. Just a shame they are not playing it live on this tour…

  7. I love the style in which this song is presented. The subject matter to me seems to be about a man obsessed with a woman who lives in a building nearby, which by itself is considered perverse. And yet, the tone of the song is from the perspective of someone who is so delusional about their obsession that they believe they are in love. The line that really drives it all home for me is, “Malt seine Farben in ihr Bild,” — “He paints her picture in his colors.” To me, this clearly presents us as the listener with the understanding that the man obsessed only sees what he creates in his own mind, and effectively convinces himself that this woman is right for him, being cast in imagery and fantasy that is most appealing to him. What a song. Till’s still got it!

  8. I like to agree with Sarah , for me as well it’s about longing in broad sense. Which makes this song a very good one. Makes me long for the older albums lol. Newer ones are too direct. But this song is a jewel.

  9. The song is describing the longing for something you can’t reach. Something you long and lust for, that is always out of reach.
    Similar to Feuer und Wasser.

  10. I get the stalker POV etc. I can see that. For me this song makes me think of my wife, and how I’d feel if I couldn’t get to her or be with her, only see. One of the best things that make Rammstein Rammstein is that almost every one of their songs can be interpreted in many ways!!
*minus zeig dich, that’s pretty cut and dry and in your face!!

  11. It isn’t “Die Herren seiner Fantasie” it is “Die Herrin seiner Fantasie” which means “the mistress of his fantasy”

  12. This song is about a stalker looking at his victim through the window. It is sung from the stalkers perspective. “Steht er da am Fensterrand mit einer Sonne in der Hand – he stands there at the edge of the window with a sun in his hand.” The sun is a torch. Because he’s been looking at his victim all day, it’s now night and he’s got the sun (torch) in his hand looking at his victim.
“Ganz nah. So weit weg von dir – very close. So far away from you.” He’s so close because he’s just the other end of the glass but he feels so far away from the victim because he can’t get in and cannot touch his victim so although he’s physically very close, he feels so far away.
