Rammstein Feuer und Wasser lyric with English translation

It's beautiful when she swims the breaststroke
Then I can see into her core
Not that the breast is what's beautiful
I just swim after her
Sparking dust flows from the center
A firework shoots from her crotch

Fire and water don't come together
Can't be bound, aren't related
Sunken in sparks, I am aflame
and am burned in the water
Burned in the water

It's beautiful when she swims naked
then I want to see her from behind
Not that the breasts are attractive
Her legs open like scissors
Then from its hiding place, the flame
glows hotly from her thigh-angle

She swims past and doesn't notice me
I am her shadow, she stands in the light
There is no hope and no confidence

Fire and water don't come together
Can't be bound, aren't related
Sunken in sparks, I am aflame
and am burned in the water
Like this, the blood boils in my loins
I grab her with wet hands
Smooth as a fish and cold as ice
She won't waste herself on me
I know

Fire and water never come together
Can't be bound, aren't related
Sunken in sparks, I am aflame
and am burned in the water

In the chorus of “Feuer und Wasser” (Fire and water) , Till Lindemann sings “Feuer und Wasser kommt nicht zusammen” (Fire and water doesn’t come together). While this would be grammatically incorrect, the use of the singular third person verb kommt rather than the plural kommen indicates the intent for fire and water to be viewed as a single entity. Thus, a literal translation would be “Fire and water doesn’t come together”. In fact, when Till Lindemann sings this sentence, he doesn’t say “da kommt nicht…”. (fire and water, (it) doesn’t come together). This song tells of a man who is madly in love with a woman that has no interest in him (Sie schwimmt vorbei bemerkt mich nicht, Ich bin ihr Schatten sie steht im Licht|She swims past and doesn’t notice me, I am her shadow, she stands in her light).

  1. My best friend from childhood recently died in a car crash where the car burned in a river. Also there’s the context of us having feelings for each other but me thinking that we weren’t ready for each other yet. Obviously I really regret it now. This song shreds my heart to bits every time.

  2. This song made me cry literal tears. Hearing the words and the emotion, and feeling as though you can directly relate to them, it’s magical. Til’s lyrics speak the words we all wish we could, those of us who have been rejected and discouraged.

  3. I first thought of a man being in love with a girl who is a swimmer/diver… and yet the man can’t swim…… but it’s wrong I think.

  4. If you think of it like this – fire is the male and water is the female. Fire wants to get close to water but knows that if he does he will get extinguished. I believe this to be a metaphor for rejection. Water has no desire for fire and carries on with her life as if he weren’t there. For fire, who feels a strong lust towards water, this is all heartbreaking.

    • I always thought it was the opposite…The water-themed man is attracted to a woman who burns like fire, with brilliant passion…but not for him. He wants to get close to her, but if he does he’ll evaporate from the heat she gives off. Either way, though, I agree it’s about rejection, and heartbreaking. TT.TT
