Rammstein Was Ich liebe lyrics with English translation

Ich kann auf Glück verzichtenI can do without luck
Weil es Unglück in sich trägtbecause it carries misfortune with it
Muss ich es vernichtenI have to destroy it
Was ich liebe, will ich richtenWhat I love, I want to fix

Dass ich froh bin, darf nicht seinI’m not allowed to be happy
Nein (nein, nein)No (no, no)

Ich liebe nicht, dass ich was liebeI don’t love that I love something
Ich mag es nicht, wenn ich was magI don’t like it when I like something
Ich freu’ mich nicht, wenn ich mich freueI’m not happy when I’m happy
Weiß ich doch, ich werde es bereuenI know, though, that later I’ll regret it

Dass ich froh bin, darf nicht seinI’m not allowed to be happy
Wer mich liebt, geht dabei einWhoever loves me, then, accepts it

Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das wird verderbenit will be ruined
Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterbenthat must also die, oh die

So halte ich mich schadlosSo I hold myself harmless
Lieben darf ich nichtI’m not allowed to love
Dann brauch’ ich nicht zu leiden (nein)Then I don’t need to suffer (no)
Und kein Herz zerbrichtAnd no hearts get broken

Dass ich froh bin, darf nicht seinI’m not allowed to be happy
Nein (nein, nein)No (no, no)

Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das wird verderbenit will be ruined
Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterbenthat must also die, oh die

Auf Glück und FreudeFrom happiness and joy
Folgen Qualenfollows agony
Für alles SchöneFor everything that’s beautiful,
Muss man zahlen, jayou have to pay, yes

Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das wird verderbenit will be ruined
Was ich liebeWhat I love,
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterbenthat must also die, oh die
Was ich liebewhat I love

  1. I can relate so much with this music as i’m struggling with retroactive jealousy. I can’t stop thinking about my girlfriend’s ex sex partners, it’s like I’m forcing myself to ruin he relationship.

  2. I find this song lot about depression and not coping things. The most difficult thing is being in love! So that’s why lyrics are dark and with no hope, only death brings peace.

  3. this song is about avoiding happiness because it will bring pain. whenever you actually taste a bit of joy you will regret it because life is all about suffering. the more you try to be happy the more you suffer agony

  4. “So halte ich mich schadlos” would be better – though less word-for-word – translated as “So I keep myself shielded”.

I’m sure that this lyric is inspired by the famous quote from Oscar Wilde’s “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” (1897): “Yet each man kills the thing he loves”. Charles Wooldrige, the subject of the poem, was a Royal Horse Guards trooper who killed his wife in a fit of jealousy.

  5. I think this describes drug addiction perfectly. What I love must die and for everything beautiful you have to pay clearly point to that.

  6. I don’t think it’s about the fear of commitment but more like about always being in pain from love. I and many others whenever we love someone we end getting hurted. lies cheating people which don’t like me back etc etc.it’s pretty clear from the ”So halte ich mich schadlos Lieben darf ich nicht” if we won’t love again we won’t get hurted again so you stay all alone in your pain just so you can avoid falling in crap again.

  7. This lyrics means a lot to me. Everything I touch gets destroyed and every person I love, hurts me or I hurt them, and no matter what I can’t get happy because love just doesn’t do it for me, it damages me. If I avoid love, I will not hurt, however I still end up hurting because yeah, no love.

  8. “So halte ich mich schadlos”

Wouldn’t a better translation for this be something like “So, I protect myself from harm”
schadlos halten literally translates to indemnify but the literal translation doesn’t always sound the best

  9. I am reminded of an old quote from Till where he said something along the lines of, “Love is like a flower, even the beautiful kind dies.” I believe this song emphasizes that previous statement’s belief. To me, I interpret it as being about the fear of commitment as well. Anything you love can/will turn to ruin, will die, will disappear. Lovely song.

  10. I think it isn’t “oh sterben” (“oh die”), at the end of the last line of the refrain, but rather, “muss sterben” (“must die”).

    “Was ich liebe,
Das muss auch sterben, must sterben”

    “What I love,
that must also die, must die”

Also, I don’t think the song is about depression (although it has that sort of tone), but rather, about the fear of commitment.
We see the world from someone’s perspective who’s afraid to commit themselves to engage in anything (including love), due to a fatalistic mindset that everything will eventually die. The song isn’t so much about nihilism as it is about paranoid pessimism – which, I think, is far more widespread these days than actual nihilism.

  11. I can do without luck
Because it carries misfortune within itself
Do I have to destroy it?
I want to judge what I love

That I am happy, cannot be*
    No (no, no)

I do not love that I love something*
I do not like it when I like something
I’m not happy when I’m happy
I know, I will regret it

That I am happy, cannot be*
Whoever loves me is part of it

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

So I hold myself harmless **
    I’m not allowed to love
Then I do not need to suffer (no)
    And no heart breaks

That I am happy, cannot be*
    No (no, no)

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

    From luck and joy
    Follows agony
    For everything beautiful
    You have to pay, yes

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

    Notes:
    * In English this would be prefaced with “The fact” as in “The fact that I am happy, cannot be”
** A better translation might be – “I think of myself as harmelss / I hold the thought of myself as being harmless
