Ich werde in die Tannen gehen I’m going to go into the fir trees
Dahin wo ich sie zuletzt gesehen There where I last saw her
Doch der Abend wirft ein Tuch aufs Land But the evening is throwing a cloth upon the land
und auf die Wege hinterm Waldesrand and upon the ways behind the edge of the forest
Und der Wald er steht so schwarz und leer And the forest it is so black and empty
Weh mir, oh weh Woe is me, oh woe
Und die Vögel singen nicht mehr And the birds sing no more

Ohne dich kann ich nicht sein Without you I cannot be
Ohne dich Without you
Mit dir bin ich auch allein With you I am alone too
Ohne dich Without you
Ohne dich zähl ich die Stunden ohne dich Without you I count the hours without you
Mit dir stehen die Sekunden With you the seconds stand still
Lohnen nicht They aren’t worth it

Auf den Ästen in den Gräben On the branches in the ditches
ist es nun still und ohne Leben it’s now silent and without life
Und das Atmen fällt mir ach so schwer And breathing becomes oh so hard for me
Weh mir, oh weh Woe is me, oh woe
Und die Vögel singen nicht mehr And the birds sing no more

Ohne dich kann ich nicht sein Without you I cannot be
Ohne dich Without you
Mit dir bin ich auch allein With you I am alone too
Ohne dich Without you
Ohne dich zähl ich die Stunden ohne dich Without you I count the hours without you
Mit dir stehen die Sekunden With you the seconds stand still
Lohnen nicht ohne dich They aren’t worth it without you

“Ohne dich” was released as the third single from the album on 22 November 2004 in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Other countries’ releases followed. It follows a slow, even romantic balladic style. The central motif is Without you, I cannot be, without you…, With you, I am also alone, without you…

The single includes as its 6th track the so-called beta version of what should have been part of Mutter. “Ohne dich” was planned for Mutter, but then dismissed.

The video was filmed in the Kaun Valley and on the Pitz Valley glacier in Tyrol, Austria. It shows the band members climbing and hiking.

  1. A day or two ago someone asked me which one song I’d take to my desert island, if I could select only one. Been thinking about it since and then I played Klavier, remembered this, then played the original version. Oh my god, there’s really no other song I know which has so much feeling. I’ve no idea what was going through Till’s head as he penned these lyrics but it is sheer melancholy genius. It’ll not cheer me up on my island but it’ll certainly stir emotion. This is the only piece I play on the piano where even my own playing brings tears to my eyes.

    • This song makes me sad every time I hear it, it’s hard to listen to. It is a masterpiece the music and Till’s voice can evoke tears that way, it’s truly an amazing song.

  2. I’m a huge fan I’ve been singing these songs since I was 16 and found out I have five star hotels in my family tree, not to mention mountain ranges and Villages full of people that speak (Walliser Dutch) a language that is based on my last name Walliser so it’s great to hear that Till and the band have made a major comeback keep it up guys, sing those love songs that keep me wishing I was at home in my mother land Deutschland AKA Germany okay…

  3. I will go into the evergreens
to the place where i saw her last
but the evening draws a shroud upon the land
and upon the paths to the forest’s edge
and the forest looms so vacant and dark
and the birds singing has ceased

with out you I can’t exist… with out you …. with you I am also alone… well using poetic liscence I disagree with some of the translation descisions but it is difficult to translate lyrics. but for those who don’t speak german there are some better options in the translation that will clear up some of this I prefer paths to ways.. b/c ways is also methods in english. ok over and out hope this gets posted the song is easy on guitar.. dm am Gm (think bar three and em fingering on 5 ) then f and back to A more or less over and over

    • Thank you for this. I am only beginning to learn German (why not use my favourite musicians to practice with), Your translation better reflects their poetic brilliance. I really wish to one day comprehend better, such a shame that my native language (english) is ridiculous.

“Weh mir, oh weh” directly translate to “Woe is me, oh woe” but is it more descriptive, a feeling of overwhelming pain?

      • I’m just learning German too, both how to speak and sing in the language. Till, I’m told, uses a theatrical performance dialect when singing. And, I read that his vocal coach is an opera singer like me.

  4. Found this band several week ago, Why I never heard of them is beyond me, but then I live in California. I am learning more German and will be fluent by the time I am 55. This song makes me realize German is romantic as it’s the sister language of English.

  5. First time reading the English lyrics for any of their songs. Never really cared before because it didn’t matter. The vocals oh god, the lyrics oh my god. This band is from some where else entirely. It is so beautiful, sorrynotsorry I Fucking Love this.

  6. Why is there no ‘habe’ in the second line?
“Dahin wo ich sie zuletzt gesehen”
    Isn’t that grammatically wrong?

    • Well, it is, grammatically speaking. However, it would ruin the rhyme. Gehen-gesehen (habe).
Also ja, was die Grammatik betrifft. Jedoch würde das den Reim zerstören.

    • I don’t remember what the grammatical terms are, but you’ll come across that sometimes in German literature, dropping the Hilfsverb at the end of a clause. Generally it’d be grammatically incorrect, or poetic.

  7. I showed this to my siblings once, hoping they’d understand the beauty and passion conveyed in this song and it’s compelling story… All I got was a “I really hate the lead singer’s voice, he makes German sound harsh”… NO, he makes it more beautiful than it already is, adding personality and strength to a lovely language. One does NOT simply hate Till’s voice!

  8. I remember Du Hast from my High School days, never really got into Rammstien then. Some one brought up Till In a conversation and made me think of them again. Been stuck on em for weeks now, working on learning German. Really like this song.

  9. when I sing this song I always remember my ex this is so painful but I can’t stop sing this song in my head -_-

    • Love that one too. Only began listening to Rammstein after I heard a first 6 “Lindemann” songs. I don’t know know why I’d never heard of them before. The band is AMAZING! ABOLUTELY IN SHOCK AS TO WHERE ALL THEIR TALENT COMES FROM. And Till… Amazing with RAMMSTEIN, that Paul guy and the French singer in the duet. He can do anything. I’m in Love with all of it.
