She's so ugly that it gets dark when she looks into the sky Then the light is frightened It shines into her face from below So she must hide during the day She just doesn't want to scare the light She lives in the shadows until the glow fades She sees a star shining in the twilight and pleads Paint beauty onto my cheeks Morningstar, oh shine onto the visage of mine Cast a warm light onto my frightening face Tell me I'm not alone Ugly, you are ugly I went alone in the night The late birds no longer sang I saw children of the sun in the throng so I cried into the starry heavens Morningstar, oh shine onto the beloved of mine Cast a warm light onto her frightening face Tell her she's not alone Morningstar, oh shine onto the soul of mine Cast a warm light onto a heart that's breaking Tell her that I'm crying Because you, you are ugly You are simply ugly Humans are just creatures of the eye Beautiful things are what I want But you, you aren't beautiful, no Morningstar, oh shine onto the beloved of mine Cast a warm light onto her frightening face Tell her she's not alone And the star wants to shine onto the beloved of mine It warms my breast and shakes where life beats To see with the heart she is simply beautiful |
A girl who is so ugly that she hides from the daylight so as not to scare it away. At night she pleads with the morning star to make her beautiful.
I think of this song every time I see a news story about a beautiful young girl who was devastatingly scarred in some terrible accident; Jacqueline Saburido, for instance.
This song is more than a women who is ugly that pleads to the morning star to give her beauty. When he sings “Der Mensch ist doch ein Augentier” (humans are just creatures of the eye) it means that alot of people treat humans based on what they see. It is so true, the ugly are made to feel horrible and the beautiful are treated like Gods. It’s sad if you think about it.
An update/elaboration of my thoughts of the song:
The story is a male perspective (arguably) on what a physically unattractive female does throughout the night. The night could also be seen as a metaphor for when nobody else is around to witness her pleas to the heavens. Still, it isn’t in first person, so what she does is just assumed by the male character. According to him, she must go out at night and plea to the heavens to have a beautiful face. The man’s story of what she must be doing at night is heard(the lines all the way up to “Hässlich”) and interrupted to say that he is ugly in that he can’t see through an ugly face. This voice could be any authority that knows that
the narrator should see through the physical attributes.
So, he continues his story of what she does throughout the nights (Ich bin allein zur Nacht gegangen…Sag ihr dass ich weine, denn) and at this point he is cut off again to point out that his views are despicable and that humans are creatures of the eye. He wants beautiful creatures that have character, not beautiful looking creatures with no character. What this man is is utterly vile in the authority’s eyes and so the man isn’t considered beautiful.
To finish the story, we’re met with the verse from before that the man is basically telling the morning star that his beloved, much like other women, are asking for that warming light. This is still in the ignorant point of view. The star wants to shine on his beloved, and when it does it makes the
man feel a new kind of love for this woman, one that warms his chest and shakes his heart. And once he achieves the ability to see with his heart, he is told by the same voice that called him ugly that she is beautiful.
badass
Omg. This made me cry a bit.
I appreciate that, Izzie. I hope more people can appreciate the poetic value behind Rammstein’s lyrics as well.
very insightful interpretation, Taryn.
that is pretty much how i perceived it, as well.
you clarify your elucidation beautifully.
fantastic song.
inspirational and beautiful.
as is to be expected from an exceptional
lyricist such as Till Lindemann.
I noticed that as well, Izzie. The judgemental voice in the song seems to be the general view of a person based on physical appearance. So when it is found out that she has this beautiful soul, she becomes beautiful. The way I interpret it, it is just in the eye of the beholder, not a physical metamorphosis, but it still works. Also, this section:
Morgenstern ach scheine
auf die Seele meine
Wirf ein warmes Licht
auf ein Herz das bricht
Sag ihr dass ich weine
Denn du, du bist hässlich
Du bist einfach hässlich
Der Mensch ist doch ein Augentier
Schöne Dinge wünsch’ ich mir
Doch du, du bist nicht schön, nein
Makes me think this part is the male perspective that wants to love the girl, but can’t appreciate her inner beauty and wants that same warming light to be cast on his heart that is breaking only because of her ugliness.
So yes, when you see with the heart, you appreciate beauty that isn’t apparent at a glance.
So, if i am interpreting this correctly, Taryn is correct, but the song reads:
“And the star wants to shine
onto the beloved of mine
It warms my breast and shakes
where life beats
To see with the heart
she is simply beautiful.”
So despite her grotesque outer appearance, he finds beauty within and falls in love with her, and seeing with his heart, she becomes beautiful?
so lovely.
A song that simply points out that society makes physical beauty seem more important than who the person really is. As if to say that the more attractive the person is, the more they are worth. Such is life.
auf mein Ungesicht = on my ugly face
