Rammstein

Ihr seht die Kreuze auf dem Kissen
Ihr meint euch darf die Unschuld küssen
Ihr glaubt zu töten wäre schwer
Doch wo kommen all die Toten her

Rammstein

Rammstein
Do you want to see the bed in flames
do you want to perish* in skin and hair
you want to stick the dagger in the sheet as well**
you want to lick the blood from the sword too**

Ram-stone

You see the crosses on the pillow
You think the innocence may kiss you
You believe it would be hard to kill
But where are all the dead coming from

Ram-stone

Sex is a battle
Love is war

Do you want to see the bed in flames
do you want to perish in skin and hair
you want to stick the dagger in the sheet as well
you want to lick the blood from the sword too

Ram-stone

Translation notes:

*untergehen does not only mean perish, it can also mean drown and get lost

** The doch brings a provocative undertone, like I bet you want to do this too.

During a live concert (example: Live aus Berlin) Till Lindemann would often have flamethrowers attached to his fingers, and would stand in an upright position with his hands behind his back to hide them. When they started singing Sex ist eine Schlacht, Liebe ist Krieg (Sex is a battle, Love is war) the flamethrowers would be activated, and he would swing his hands in a circular motion, spraying flames and sparks all around him.

The song was used as the theme music for the nearly identical Space Ghost Coast to Coast episodes Brilliant Number One and Brilliant Number Two.

This song also features samples used on the Doom PC game, the marine death scream after each verse and the shotgun cocking during the Sex ist eine Schlacht, Liebe ist Krieg chorus.

  1. Personally this is one of my least favorite of Rammsteins songs. Hertzleid just sounds very unrefined as a whole compared to later albums. Tills voice has a very gravely tone to it, and its evident that they’re still figuring things out. Not a bad thing tho. Great things have come from the band. Just some random thoughts

  2. Dolch is also the medical term for vagina in German, this song has alot more sexual references than you think, especially relating to abortion.

    • You are thinking of the word Scheide, Dolch just means dagger a type of knife. I have never heard it used for vagina. A Scheide can be a sheath for a dagger.

  3. One website says that Till says after “sex ist eine Schlacht” “Jah” but it sounds more like “Digga” which means “dude”

  4. Could anyone update the transcription, lyrics says raMstein not raMMstein therefore there is no english translation but raMstein. I may be wrong but I highly doubt that they say Rammstein just for the sake of it without any real reason.

  5. I’ve seen many people assume this song may be about sex. While it may be true, I believe this is song is about how people love to hear stories about chaos and tragedies (Like the song “Spring”). This song I’m assuming is using the Ramstein airshow accident as an example. While it may not be about the Rammstein airshow specifically, it may be a metaphor or a represent of other tragedies. Reason I think the Ramstein airshow accident is involved in the song in some capacity is due to at the time the band saw the accident and wanted to make a musical tribute for it so they named themselves rammstein and made the song rammstein. I shall further explain how the accident may be involved by going over the lyrics.

Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen
wollt ihr in Haut und Haaren untergehen
ihr wollt doch auch den Dolch ins Laken stecken
ihr wollt doch auch das Blut vom Degen lecken

This section might be addressing those who want to see the tragedies asking if they want to see some chaos, then betting that they do.

    Rammstein

This is the mention of the accident.

Ihr seht die Kreuze auf dem Kissen
Ihr meint euch darf die Unschuld küssen
Ihr glaubt zu töten wäre schwer
Doch wo kommen all die Toten her

The first two lines is addressing how the people think they’re innocent. The third line addresses how people always get shocked by such tragedies and the fourth line addresses that many tragedies occur every day.

    Rammstein

    Another mention of the accident.

    Sex ist eine Schlacht
    Liebe ist Krieg

Sex and love might be a metaphor for the desire to want to hear about such tragedies and the battle and war might be a metaphor for denying their desires.

Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen
wollt ihr in Haut und Haaren untergehen
ihr wollt doch auch den Dolch ins Laken stecken
ihr wollt doch auch das Blut vom Degen lecken

Again, this section asks if the people wants to hear about tragedies then insists that the do.

    Rammstein

    Final mention of the accident.

Note: When I’m talking about the song addressing a certain group of people, I myself am not referring to a specific group. The only group I can see this song talking to is news station people that want tragedies to occur to get the story out for good viewership to ultimately get money. It may refer to another group. Either way I hope you enjoyed my interpretation and hope it helped you think about what the song might mean too. 🙂

    • I’ve actually never heard this band, well not that I’m aware of anyway, and I am very impressed. Love the music, love the sounds. I do understand some German ~ it’s been awhile, but it’s hard for me to hear a lot of lyrics because on YouTube the music is drowning him out. But hey, I’m still bangin’ !!)
By tje way I loved the performance where he was singing with the light in his mouth, that was so bitchin’

    • I agree with you that it could be about people loving chaos and disasters etc. Though I don’t think it’s about the Ramstein airshow, because they already have a song about that called “Rammstein”

      Rammstein
      A man is burning
      Rammstein
The smell of flesh lies in the air
      Rammstein
      A child is dying
      Rammstein
      The sun is shining

      Rammstein
      A sea of flames
      Rammstein
Blood is coagulating on the asphalt
      Rammstein
      Mothers are screaming
      Rammstein
      The sun is shining

      Rammstein
      A mass grave
      Rammstein
      No escape
      Rammstein
      No birds are singing anymore
      Rammstein
      The sun is shining

  6. Heard somewhere that one translation of ‘rammstein’ is ‘battering ram’. It would certainly be the applicable translation for this song.
