You see him creeping around the church he has been alone for a year The sadness took away all of his senses he sleeps every night by her grave There, by the bells sleeps a stone and I alone can read it and on the fence, the red rooster who was your heart at that time The fear has been skewered on this fence I now go digging every night to see what still remains of the face that smiled for me There by the bells I spend the night there between snails, a lonely animal during the day I run after the night you escape me for the second time Marry me with my hands I dig deep to find what I missed so much and under the moon in its most beautiful dress I have kissed your cold mouth I take you tenderly by the arm but your skin rips like paper and parts fall off of you you escape me for the second time Marry me So I take what still remains the night is hot and we are naked according to the curse the rooster greets the morning so I hacked off his head |
“Heirate mich”, is about necrophilia and love for the dead, representing a deep longing for lovers past. In the lyrical booklet for Herzeleid, the lyrics are printed in French, because according to the band, no one would be disturbed if it was in French. It is considered to be one of Rammstein’s more controversial songs, and was inspired by the death of Till’s father.
The song is considered to be very impressive when played live. During certain performances, a collection of sex dolls could be seen on-stage. After the introduction, the dolls’ heads would explode. During a performance at Bizarre Festival in 1997, Flake was replaced with a mannequin that’s head was knocked off by Till – emitting sparks.
The song has appeared on the soundtrack for David Lynch’s Lost Highway and in the theatrical trailer for American Psycho.
the red rooster is reffered to another man which she secretly had an affair with during their relationship.
the woman is not really dead. the relationship died, and the man keeps thinking of it, and talks about how cold she was sexually towards him when they were in the relationship.
@Shelton I believe the same thing. Maybe since the rooster was his heart, he cut his own heart out. I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean it the way Taryn made it sound.
@Shelton — Hell, even if Rammstein didn’t intend that reference to make sense, it still does. That’s half the fun of any Rammstein song.
Anyone else catch that this might draw inspiration from the Hunchback of Notre Dame? As in, the original version where Esmeralda is killed, and Quasimodo starves to death “embracing” her corpse? The fact that Heirate Mich was printed in French may be a hint at a similar story. They made it their own tale, of course, but anyone else see the literary reference or am I imagining it?
One of my favourite Rammstein songs.
Taryn, I think your explanation makes more sense than mine, but I always thought he “killed” the rooster because it announced the end of the night – meaning his time with this (dead) woman is over. (I take the whole song figuratively.)
One of their most charged song…a powerful blast of RAMMSTEIN !
…WOW. Taryn, you rule on so many levels.
Thanks Taryn!
Before you spelled it out I already got everything, but I just couldn’t believe that he would FOR REAL cut his dick off!
I mean… DAMN! HE’S COMPLETELY LOST IT….. literally.
Did he really cut it off??? *Still in disbelief*
A dissection of the song:
Man sieht ihn um die Kirche schleichen
seit einem Jahr ist er allein
Die Trauer nahm ihm alle Sinne
schläft jede Nacht bei ihrem Stein
(As we are introduced to the story, the people’s impression of this man is that since his love interest has passed, the sadness has taken all of his senses, at least in their eyes. The people believe him to be sleeping by her grave each night, but never investigating more than that.)
Dort bei den Glocken schläft ein Stein
und ich alleine kann ihn lesen
(The story is then changed to first person. When he claims that he alone can read the stone, it is saying that he is the only one that can read between the lines, so to speak. All the others who mourned her did it swiftly and went on their way and never put much thought to it past that.
und auf dem Zaun der rote Hahn
ist seiner Zeit dein Herz gewesen
(Suddenly, while he is climbing the fence, he gets a rush of passion for her which results in an erection. The woman had only cared for the sexual side of the relationship while the man always seeked something on a more emotional level.)
Die Furcht auf diesen Zaun gespießt
geh ich nun graben jede Nacht
zu sehen was noch übrig ist
von dem Gesicht das mir gelacht
(The passion subsides and he continues to go to the grave. He digs for her to see what is left of that face that smiled for him, once again noting that he cares for much more than sexual satisfaction.)
Dort bei den Glocken verbring ich die Nacht
dort zwischen Schnecken ein einsames Tier
tagsüber lauf ich der Nacht hinterher
zum zweitenmal entkommst du mir
(Here he compares himself to a snail; a lonely animal that seldom sees interest from others. During the day he awaits the next time he can visit his beloved. She escaped him the first time denying the same emotional interest and now the second time by dying, never allowing him to ask her hand in marriage.)
Mit meinen Händen grab ich tief
zu finden was ich so vermisst
und als der Mond im schönsten Kleid
hab deinen kalten Mund geküsst
Ich nehm dich zärtlich in den Arm
doch deine Haut reißt wie Papier
und Teile fallen von dir ab
zum zweitenmal entkommst du mir
(Further brings the romantic view of this story and puts a literal twist on her escaping him.)
So nehm ich was noch übrig ist
die Nacht ist heiß und wir sind nackt
zum Fluch der Hahn den Morgen grüßt
ich hab den Kopf ihm abgehackt
(In a final attempt to prove his love for her, he is here with her, hot and naked.)
zum Fluch der Hahn den Morgen grüßt
(Again, the “rooster” arises and ruins an emotional moment with the two.)
ich hab den Kopf ihm ab…ge…hackt!
(To end the sexual drive once and for all, he severs the head of the penis.)
So, to summarize, the man is irritated with how sexual tension always gets involved and often interrupts a beautiful moment. This can be noted in everyday life, whether it be someone making a sexual situation out of anything or how romance is dead in many people and several types of media.
This also plays into people seeing just whats apparent, like the people who knew this man who visited the grave every night.
THAT’S ALL FINE and good, but a bit audacious to be so detailed when the words came from inside the mind of another person.
It’s more of a personal interpretation than a definite answer, I think.
Everybody operates different when it comes to interpreting art, @dawnatilla.
Hi Mindy, my name is Jorge, and I love this guys too!!..even when their lyrics may shock me, still they play so dam good, I can only keep rocking!!…by the way, I’m from Costa Rica…
…and, wasn’t Poe also in to necrophilia? although I don’t think it was physical. I think it was more about the longing and emptiness he was left with, when his lovely Leonore dies.
Anyway, this is so Fu$%& GOOD!!..
Hi my name is Mindy I'm from Honduras and I love Rammstein.
