Rammstein Das Alte Leid lyric with English translation

Aus der Bohne und in das Licht
ein Wesen mich zu gehen drängt
für die selbe Sache und das alte Leid
meine Tränen mit Gelächter fängt
und auf der Matte fault ein junger Leib
wo das Schicksal seine Puppen lenkt
für die selbe Sache und das alte Leid
weiß ich endlich hier wird nichts verschenkt

Aus der Bohne und in das Nichts
weiß jeder was am Ende bleibt
dieselbe Sache und das alte Leid
mich so langsam in den Wahnsinn treibt
und auf der Matte tobt derselbe Krieg
mir immer noch das Herz versengt
dieselbe Sache und das alte Leid
weiß ich endlich...

Ich will ficken

Nie mehr das alte Leid
Out of the bean and into the light
a being pushes me to go
for the same thing and the old sorrow
it catches my tears with laughter
and on the mat a young body rots
where fate directs its puppets
for the same thing and the old sorrow
I know at last that nothing is given away here

Out of the seed and into the nothingness
everyone knows what remains at the end
the same thing and the old sorrow
it drives me slowly to insanity
and the same war rages on the mat
it still always scorches my heart
the same thing and the old sorrow
I know at last...

I want to fuck

Never again, the old sorrow

“Das alte Leid” is about the old sorrow of unfulfilled sexual desires, as explained in the line, “Ich will ficken” (“I want to fuck”). At live performances during this line, Till would emerge with a large firecracker protruding from his pants, which would explode emitting sparks.

  1. “The old sorrow” means life itself, in the sense that life is inseparable from desire and, ultimately, from death. We are thrown into life, i.e. into desiring others i.e. into suffering, not so much here because the desire remains unfulfilled, but because even as we throw ourselves into loving the ‘junge Leiber’ and cannot help but doing so, we are aware of the fact that our joys and our efforts remain vain and only serve to bring closer to consciousness what we try to forget through sexual relationships: that we are mortal, and will die. On the mat, the young man/woman I love is already rotting in the ground. I know that nothing ‘verschenkt wird hier’ (in diesem Leben). And yet… I want to forget it. ‘Ich will…’
    One of my favourites.

  2. Uh press your ears into the speakers or headphones cause it’s not weiß ich endlich for this song. It’s weiß, und endlich.
Yes use a comma after the word weiß and a space and you will get the correct translation of in ENGLISH that is white and finally. P.S. RAMMSTEIN tends to have songs in double meanings, pun, play, and yes even adlibs for live versions of songs so that means boys & girls you’re gonna have to really study 1st the german language wich in my opinion is brutal seing how there is upper & lower german as well as variations like german dutch, etc. 2nd sometimes word(s) or meaning(s) can get lost in translation 3rd RAMMSTEIN likes to especially Till i believe likes to give some songs altered, dark, deep, demented, hidden, obscured, opposite, meanings and the list could go on So in closing keep listening and you might figure it all out some day or go to like an autograph signing for example and as em’, so untill that day or days happy brainerism’s 🙂

    • I agree: There ‘may be’ a ‘core’ image to ‘land’ the lyrics on, but being poetic and artful, personal interpretations are valid; and it does seem that Till and the Lads want you to go on a little research journey. EG., Das Alte Lied (from the first album, Herzeleid) is sung in German, but written in French in the lyrics sheet. Mysteries to be solved. Bon voyage!
On first hearing Rammstein, I could envisage it as ‘Rammstein the Opera/Musical’, with all that Germanic Sturm and Drang. His parents occupations may have also had an effect on his Till’s penmanship.

  3. i want to fuck never again, the old sorrow i think it means he doesnt want to have a child and the beggining is about being born and well yea about life and he doesnt want to continue the cycle and create another human being who like bizzeeb said would perpetuate the cycle

  4. Summing up these lyrics to represent unfulfilled sexual desires is rather simplistic. It is about being born, becoming an adult and survival of the fittest. The irony is in spite of the torment of life and repeating 'nie mehr…', we can't overcome the one primal urge that causes us to perpetuate the cycle.
