Lyrics of Rammstein song “Meine Tränen” and English translation

[Strophe 1] [Verse 1]
Ich leb’ noch immer bei Mama I still live with Mom
Jetzt schon alt, doch immer da Old now, but always there
Auch wenn die Ärmel jetzt länger sind Even if the sleeves are longer now
Bin ich immer noch ihr kleines Kind I’m still her little child
Wir sind allein, doch viel zu zweit We are alone, but a lot as a pair
Und teilen gern ein halbes Leid And gladly share half a sorrow
Das Haus ist klein, die Stille groß The house is small, the silence is big
Sie zwingt mich oft auf ihren Schoß She often forces me onto her lap

[Strophe 2] [Verse 2]
Ich leb’ noch immer bei Mama I still live with Mom
Und bleibe wohl für immer da And will probably stay there forever
Im Haus fehlt lang schon ein Mann In the house, a man has been lacking for a long time
Ich helfe aus, so gut ich kann I’m helping out as best I can

[Pre-Refrain] [Pre-Chorus]
Viel Liebe schenkt mir Mutter nicht Mother doesn’t give me much love
Doch schlägt sie immer noch in mein Gesicht But she still slaps my face
Und ab und zu hab’ ich geweint And now and then I’vе cried
Da hat sie lächelnd nur gemeint Then she only said with a smilе

[Refrain] [Chorus]
Ein Mann weint nur, wenn seine Mutter stirbt A man only cries when his mother dies
Der Tod ist stark, das Herz ist schwach Death is strong, the heart is weak
Wenn das eigen Fleisch und Blut verdirbt When your own flesh and blood spoils
Der Klügere gibt nach The cleverer give in

[Strophe 3] [Verse 3]
Auch den Vater konnte sie nicht lieben She couldn’t love the father either
Hat ihn aus der Welt getrieben Driven him out of the world
Dann und wann ein stummer Schrei Now and then a silent scream
Und eine kleine Litanei And a little litany

[Pre-Refrain] [Pre-Chorus]
Viel Liebe gab ihm Mutter nicht Mother didn’t give him much love
Doch schlug sie oft in sein Gesicht But she often slapped his face
Ab und zu hat er geweint Now and then he has cried
Da hat sie lächelnd nur gemeint Then she only said with a smile

[Refrain] [Chorus]
Ein Mann weint nur, wenn seine Mutter stirbt A man only cries when his mother dies
Der Tod ist stark, das Herz ist schwach Death is strong, the heart is weak
Wenn das eigen Fleisch im Blut verdirbt When your own flesh and blood spoils
Der Klügere gibt nach The cleverer give in

[Post-Refrain] [Post-Chorus]
Du solltest dich schämen You should be ashamed of yourself
Zeig nie deine Tränen Never show your tears
Du solltest dich schämen You should be ashamed of yourself
Zeig nie deine Tränen Never show your tears
Deine Tränen Your tears

[Outro] [Outro]
Deine Tränen Your tears
Deine Tränen Your tears

  1. I shared the lyrics for this with my dad shortly after my grandmother died. It really hit a soft spot for both of us. Even now I can’t listen to it without thinking about her. Miss you gandma

    • It’s a song about an extremely abusive mother (who literally drove her own husband to suicide and sexually, emotionally and physically abuses her own son) , so I’m not sure why that “hit a soft spot” for the both of you.
The part about “you’re only supposed to cry when your mother dies” (which I guess could get lost in translation if you’re not german) is emotional manipulation, conditioning a man to only care about his mother and become cold to the world. It’s not about love (except her twisted version of it)
So yea, it’s not supposed to be a mourning song… unless your grandma was a horrible woman

  2. This is like Mutter part 2. Not the same point of view or idea, but similar approaches to familiar, social and existential trauma. Great song.
