Lyrics of Rammstein song “Adieu” and English translation

[Strophe 1] [Verse 1]
Nur der Tod währt alle Zeit Only death lasts forever
Er flüstert unterm Tannenzweig It whispers under the pine branch
Muss alles in sein Dunkel zieh’n Must draw everything into its darkness
Sogar die Sonne wird verglüh’n Even the sun will burn out

[Pre-Refrain] [Pre-Chorus]
Doch keine Angst, wir sind bei dir But don’t worry, we are with you
Ein letztes Mal, so singen wir One last time, so we sing

[Refrain] [Chorus]
Adieu, goodbye, auf Wiederseh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Den letzten Weg musst du alleine geh’n You have to go the last way alone
Ein letztes Lied, ein letzter Kuss One last song, one last kiss
Kein Wunder wird gescheh’n No miracle will happen
Adiеu, goodbye, auf Wiedersеh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Die Zeit mit dir war schön I had a nice time with you

[Strophe 2] [Verse 2]
Aus dem Leben steigst du leise You quietly rise from life
Die Seele zieht auf stille Reise The soul goes on a quiet journey
Fleisch vergeht, Geist wird sich heben Flesh perishes, spirit will rise
Das Sein wird sich dem Tod ergeben (Ja) The being will surrender to death (Yes)

[Pre-Refrain] [Pre-Chorus]
Am Ende bist du ganz allein In the end, you are all alone
Doch wir werden bei dir sein But we will be with you

[Refrain] [Chorus]
Adieu, goodbye, auf Wiederseh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Den letzten Weg musst du alleine geh’n You have to go the last way alone
Ein letztes Lied, ein letzter Kuss One last song, one last kiss
Kein Wunder wird gescheh’n No miracle will happen
Adieu, goodbye, auf Wiederseh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Die Zeit mit dir war schön I had a nice time with you

[Bridge] [Bridge]
Jeder stirbt für sich allein (Ganz allein) Everyone dies alone (All alone)
Doch du wirst immer bei uns sein But you will always be with us

[Refrain] [Chorus]
Adieu, goodbye, auf Wiederseh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Den letzten Weg musst du alleine geh’n You have to go the last way alone
Ein letztes Lied, ein letzter Kuss One last song, one last kiss
Kein Wunder wird gescheh’n No miracle will happen
Adieu, goodbye, auf Wiederseh’n Adieu, goodbye, see you again!
Die Zeit mit dir war schön I had a nice time with you

  1. There was an echo of the film The Immortals in video ( great production values, as always). The band arrived, destroyed their beloved clones…it seemed reluctantly, and and yet were drawn into the Titans v the God’s. eternal conflict.

We fight to make better versions of ourselves but constantly fight with the old and new, but in the end we die anyway, hence the end scene. And the vertical red light is the source we all return to.

It’s not goodbye, it’s more you can’t say goodbye. Just a few thoughts out of the box

  2. I see this as a beautiful parting song, but I am positively sure it wasn’t intended to be an ending for Rammstein career (just an exceptional album closer).

It begins stating “only death lasts forever”. So the listeners, musicians, even music itself, is doomed to perish. However the lyrics have powerful lines which defy mortality: “But don’t worry, we are with you” and “I had a nice time with you”, also “But we will be with you”, and, the most powerful in my view “But you will always be with us”

“Adieu” twists the idea of an artist bowing down for the last time to an audience. It tells us, the listeners, the audience of their art, that when our time comes, when we face death, we will be alone, but our memory will remains within their art. So we may be eased of our parting. We will tread the first step of a lonely and silent journey, knowing that we’ve helped to strength Rammstein’s music.

Think about those heartwarming stories of terminally ill fans, who reach out to others, in social media or charity organizations, in order of being able to watch a beloved movie before it hit theaters. Such fans know they will not be able to see their beloved art before dying. These people know that no miracles will happen, but their pain is eased when they are able to witness their beloved art for the last time.

I know this comparison might be cheesy, but it was the best I could think of. Rather than being a swansong for Rammstein, “Adieu” is a parting song for the audience itself. Upon stating, “We will be with you”, the song gives every listener a big thank you, be at peace, for your soul will live on inside our art.

When we think about this concept, we can also think that, as long as there is someone listening to Rammstein’s art, that someone’s living memory will be there. In this sense, the song becomes a unifying statement, which literally says “But you (audience) will always be with us (artists)”

Only death lasts forever. Rammstein music will perish too, but until then, art and audience will be part of the same whole, giving strength to one another, until the very end.

Surely my interpretation might be wrong… Nevertheless, I hear the song in this way and I am glad of being part of it.

  3. Like the translation (but be might be beitzer Deutsch in English for native speakers, could I suggest a translation like this):

Adieu, goodbye, see you again! – Farewell, goodbye, see you again
Den letzten Weg musst du alleine geh’n You have to walk the last mile alone
Ein letztes Lied, ein letzter Kuss One last song, one last kiss
Kein Wunder wird gescheh’n No miracles will happen
Adiеu, goodbye, auf Wiedersеh’n – Farewell, goodbye, see you again!
Die Zeit mit dir war schön The time with you was nice

    [Strophe 2] [Verse 2]
Aus dem Leben steigst du leise You quietly step out of life
Die Seele zieht auf stille Reise The soul goes on a peceful journey
Fleisch vergeht, Geist wird sich heben Flesh perishes, spirit will rise
Das Sein wird sich dem Tod ergeben (Ja) The being will surrender to death (Yes)

  4. After verse 2 I hear him say “Gibt Nogh” (definetly not how to spell it but I don’t speak much German). Just wondering if anyone else hears this

  5. This is just a goodbye to the album. They will be releasing a studio version of Ramm4 on their next studio album. These guys are having a shitload of fun making and playing music lately.

  6. Wonder if this song actually means Rammstein is announcing its retirement, I hope that’s not the case, I was last Sunday in his presentation in Foro Sol Mexico and it was AMAZING, just the memories give me the chills.

    • It’s a crazy way to end an album and the show and I thought the same thing. I hope that is not the case as well

  7. Personally I always translated the chorus as ” Goodbye, Goodbye, we’ll meet again.” Just sounds more poetic and heartfelt

    • Also, the line “It whispers under the pine branch” would make much more sense as “He said beneath the pine tree”. Just small details

  8. I like the French pianist, Duo Jatakok who played during this song in Philly. Especially with the crown singing.

    • Also being in attendance in Philly, I mean no offense, I believe it was Duo Abelard who opened instead of Duo Jatekok.

  9. “Die Zeit mit dir war schön” is literally “The time with you was beautiful,” if I had to do a colloquial English translation I would say something like “Our time together was beautiful,” I see the Google Translate here and it’s not great
