If I remember correctly, the flower was used to represent the Edelweiss pirates, a youth group who opposed Hitler, leading to many of them being executed.....

I think you refer to the White Rose, "Die Weiße Rose". If you can, watch the film Sophie Scholl, based on a novel with the same title.
Edelweiss is a little precious flower that grows at quite a high altitude in alpine landscapes, and as it is not easy to go there and just take it. It was actually a symbol of bravery and used by the mountain rangers of the SS during the III Reich. But not only by them, of course.
It is also a white beer :P
