Rammstein Was Ich liebe lyrics with English translation

Ich kann auf Glück verzichten
Weil es Unglück in sich trägt
Muss ich es vernichten
Was ich liebe, will ich richten

Dass ich froh bin, darf nicht sein
Nein (nein, nein)

Was ich liebe
Das wird verderben
Was ich liebe
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterben

So halte ich mich schadlos
Lieben darf ich nicht
Dann brauch' ich nicht zu leiden (nein)
Und kein Herz zerbricht

Dass ich froh bin, darf nicht sein
Nein (nein, nein)

Was ich liebe
Das wird verderben
Was ich liebe
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterben

Auf Glück und Freude
Folgen Qualen
Für alles Schöne
Muss man zahlen, ja

Was ich liebe
Das wird verderben
Was ich liebe
Das muss auch sterben, oh sterben
Was ich liebe

Lyric © Rammstein
I can do without luck
because it carries misfortune with it
I have to destroy it
What I love, I want to fix

I'm not allowed to be happy
No (no, no)

I don't love that I love something
I don't like it when I like something
I'm not happy when I'm happy
I know, though, that later I'll regret it

I'm not allowed to be happy
Whoever loves me, then, accepts it

What I love,
it will be ruined
What I love,
that must also die, oh die

So I hold myself harmless
I'm not allowed to love
Then I don't need to suffer (no)
And no hearts get broken

I'm not allowed to be happy
No (no, no)

What I love,
it will be ruined
What I love,
that must also die, oh die

From happiness and joy
follows agony
For everything that's beautiful,
you have to pay, yes

What I love,
it will be ruined
What I love,
that must also die, oh die
what I love

  1. I don’t think it’s about the fear of commitment but more like about always being in pain from love. I and many others whenever we love someone we end getting hurted. lies cheating people which don’t like me back etc etc.it’s pretty clear from the ”So halte ich mich schadlos Lieben darf ich nicht” if we won’t love again we won’t get hurted again so you stay all alone in your pain just so you can avoid falling in crap again.

  2. This lyrics means a lot to me. Everything I touch gets destroyed and every person I love, hurts me or I hurt them, and no matter what I can’t get happy because love just doesn’t do it for me, it damages me. If I avoid love, I will not hurt, however I still end up hurting because yeah, no love.

  3. “So halte ich mich schadlos”

Wouldn’t a better translation for this be something like “So, I protect myself from harm”
schadlos halten literally translates to indemnify but the literal translation doesn’t always sound the best

  4. I am reminded of an old quote from Till where he said something along the lines of, “Love is like a flower, even the beautiful kind dies.” I believe this song emphasizes that previous statement’s belief. To me, I interpret it as being about the fear of commitment as well. Anything you love can/will turn to ruin, will die, will disappear. Lovely song.

  5. I think it isn’t “oh sterben” (“oh die”), at the end of the last line of the refrain, but rather, “muss sterben” (“must die”).

    “Was ich liebe,
Das muss auch sterben, must sterben”

    “What I love,
that must also die, must die”

Also, I don’t think the song is about depression (although it has that sort of tone), but rather, about the fear of commitment.
We see the world from someone’s perspective who’s afraid to commit themselves to engage in anything (including love), due to a fatalistic mindset that everything will eventually die. The song isn’t so much about nihilism as it is about paranoid pessimism – which, I think, is far more widespread these days than actual nihilism.

  6. I can do without luck
Because it carries misfortune within itself
Do I have to destroy it?
I want to judge what I love

That I am happy, cannot be*
    No (no, no)

I do not love that I love something*
I do not like it when I like something
I’m not happy when I’m happy
I know, I will regret it

That I am happy, cannot be*
Whoever loves me is part of it

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

So I hold myself harmless **
    I’m not allowed to love
Then I do not need to suffer (no)
    And no heart breaks

That I am happy, cannot be*
    No (no, no)

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

    From luck and joy
    Follows agony
    For everything beautiful
    You have to pay, yes

    What I love
    It will spoil
    What I love
That must also die, oh die

    Notes:
    * In English this would be prefaced with “The fact” as in “The fact that I am happy, cannot be”
** A better translation might be – “I think of myself as harmelss / I hold the thought of myself as being harmless
